QARTIER

A BRAND NEW ART SPACE

Qartier is the name of the brand-new art space located at premetro station Beurs, here Zinnema will be reigning in an artistic fashion for three years straight.

The space was inaugurated all together with the rest of newly renovated station in February 2019 after more than two years of intensive renovation.

Before the instalment of the cultural area an open call was launched. The purpose of this call was to promote artistic diversity in Brussels and Belgium to a bigger audience and to create a constant dynamic in the public space. One of the main motives was to lower the threshold to culture by reaching out to civilians, visitors, travelers and random by-passers, keeping in mind the general cultural rights.

Zinnema was crowned the winner of the open call and will be Qartier’s artistic programmer until 2022. The Open Talenthouse wants to aim the spotlight on the divers and typical Brussels, artistic capital to share it with its travelers and by-passers. Zinnema will be passing on the torch every four months to a new curator so that he or she can implement an exhibition concept and can select artists whose work will be displayed. In this manner Zinnema wants to grant the opportunity to different voices to be heard and does it offer different narratives on the city.

Mangoo Pickle, ON THE ROOF, Timiss and Kadanja are the first four curators who each demonstrated a different aspect of the city through dynamic exhibitions. The selection was made with a lot of attention for diversity: the line-up of nine curators, dispersed over a period of three years, forms an intergenerational and  interdisciplinary whole, with attention to differences in origin, socio-economic background, biological sex and possible limitations from the mainstream to underground.

The follow-up of the project, which is an initiative of Brussels minister Pascal Smet, will be happening in cooperation with the department Art & Architecture Direction infrastructure of the Public Transportation and is assembled by representatives of the cabinet from the minister of Mobility, Public Transportation, the Mobility of Brussels and the MIVB and external experts in art, the public space and urban sociology.
